Well, I did it.  Dropped my topend Rapture Driver and Wood for R9s.  Some observations.

Yes!  Using Callaway i(z), for the record.   Did my fairway % drop?  Yep, it did.  I played an 18 at BPB where I hit 9 fairways.  But my GiR went up, my distance to the cup dropped, my putting avg went down.  Something to be said for being 295 in the first cut of rough over 255 in the fairway.  I hit 9 fairways, but I only missed 2 greens, and I scrambled 100%, didn't find sand, and made 11 birdies in 18 holes, including a birdie on the first 5 holes of the back 9.  Missed 4 eagles by inches, I was so on the pin on my approaches.  Why?  40 yards closer to the pin, my average drive was 290+.

The meter took a little getting used to after the Rapture.  But, after a couple high 70 rounds, I settled down with a 67 at BPB and a 67 at SA, both under TP conditions.  Then back to the Black.  I shot a -8 62, with 11 birdies.  A double bogey on the evil b*tch #15 and a putting snafu on #18 where I didn't check my meter length and hit a 14' 2 inch downhill birdie putt 85% on a 30' meter.  It was dead in, too, if it had been half as hard.  I missed the comeback to 3 putt.  Was really close to a 60 or less.  The true highlight of the round was the long par 4 at #7.  It was the only drive I really lost, right, long and into the trees.  But I punched a Cleveland 60 out 40 yards into the fairway, then dropped a 5 iron 2' from the cup to save the hole.

The club has a med trajectory, so I am finding that it behooves me to hit it with full backspin all the time.  I get more distance with it even into the wind, because the wind will knock it down quickly at it's normal trajectory.  Also, with full backspin, it is landing soft as a baby's butt.  I'm able to drop it on the narrow fairways of Bethpage over trees and nestle softly on the short grass, or edge into the first cut at least 50 yards closer than I could get with the Raptures.  The Raptures weren't 50 yards shorter than this club, but I can get places with this one.  And as far as the clubs listed 275?  I don't think I had more than one drive the whole round under 275.   I'm also loving the Wood as well.  With this upgrade, I removed the Hybrid from my bag and went to the extra wedge.  Playing Cleveland 56 and 60, with the Satin64 my scalpel.  And there is no par 4 I can't reach now, and most par 5s are now theoretically reachable with a strong tailwind.  I just missed a legit 337 yard drive on BPB that just edged into the first cut.  The better I get with the R9, the greater the chance I turn in the Rapture Irons, which I like a lot, for the G10s or Tour Preferred.

Well written posting!  I am also a faithful Rapture driver/wood player. In my case, i have tried the level62 R9 and went from 90-95 percent fairways to about 40-50 with the R9. not good, so i got rid of that club..

I also use the level 48 rapture irons and have about the same 90-95 % GIR average. But, I think the hidden key to the whole thought process is the short game.

When you do miss that 1-2 greens or so per round, the ability to get up & down from any ball position for that par or birdie, is critical to winning that match/alternate shot game or scoring well in those tourneys offered by clubs & WGT.

Like many of the top players, my level 39, 64 degree wedge is THAT key. From 50 yards and in, this club is almost (with practice) a guarantee to get you very close to the hole, then combine that with a quality putter (daytona for me)...then bingo!

Again, thanks for sharing your thoughts..

The Satin64 degree is, as I said, my scalpel.  Get me that close and I'm within 5', no matter the lie or green.  I'm too erratic still with a putter to average really low yet, but tee to green I'm loving it.

As a follow up, my next round was a 65 at Kiawah, TP conditions.

I also use the Rossa.  My short game is top notch.  If I am in the first cut or fairway with a 7 iron or higher in my hand, I am going to have a prime putt following it, always within 20', usually within 15', often within 10'.  But you can't 3 putt from 12', like I did in the round at BPB twice, though once they were separated by a chip from the fringe after my first putt ran off the green (#15) and once because I misread the meter.  Give me two of those back, I shot a 60.  Give me the result I should have gotten if I putted like the top players, 59 (one of the putts at #15 I don't think was makable by anything but a machine).

At Kiawah, I three putted for a bogey when I lagged a long putt to 4' then missed the par follow.  I can't do those kinds of things and be a top player.

Also, Safari, my fairways went from 85%-90% to 9 hit out of... how many par 3s on BPB?  Four?  9 out of 14.  But all of my other stats went up.  GiR, shorter distance to cup, less putts.  My average drive went from 258-264 with the Raptures to 291 with the R9.  Almost all save one drive that missed landed in the short grass and ran off into the first cut.  And I believe that I can get closer with an 8 iron from the first cut than a 4 or 5 from the fairway.

So for me, upgrading from the Rapture was a no brainer.  If you were really losing a lot of drives, leaving them in the heavy rough or losing them in the weeds or trees, though, I could understand switching back.  One of the keys to me is the backspin.  It makes the R9 feel more comfortable, less abrupt and more like the Rapture.  So for me, the R9 is a much better club than the level 47 Rapture even though I love the meter on the Rapture.  Even though I am playing a lot more out of first cut rough than I was before, the R9s sheer length gives me better scoring chances.  And it beats the g10 for me because I am just off the ding as often as on it, and the R9 is a more forgiving driver.

Edit:  Followed up with a 64 at BPB.  So no question.  I carry a 67.12 avg as a Tour Pro.  In 5 practice rounds since I upgraded and since I got familiar with this new driver and wood (and I'm still learning the two Cleveland wedges I moved in for the 56 degree satin), I have shot 67, 67, 62, 65, 64.  Two things:  more than a two stroke improvement.  And it will probably only last one round, at first.  Because the next tourney I play at TP level I will probably bump to Master.  Then longer tees and longer approaches again LOL
