    Cheapest and not that hard. 

    If you are on a home network/hub:

    Get everything you want to save in one place. It doesn't really matter where. Everything could go into Pictures. Sort it later. In Windows Explorer right click Pictures (or wherever you moved stuff) Choose Share With Homegroup (or whatever your network is called)

    Get new machine. Hook it up to home network. Then in Windows Explorer Network, you will be able to navigate to the shared area of the old machine. Copy/paste the whole enchilada.

    Hard drive don't live eternally - after two years of use, the should be exchanged, which would bring the user to step 1 ;)
