I am still using the basic putter, the one you start with. Would investing in another putter make a significant difference and if so which one do you recommend?

Steve, most people will say yes, buy the best you can afford, some will say get anything except the spider, and then there's me. Upgrade to the other free one,the beginners.

There will no doubt come a time when I shall have to eat my words, in which case I will mention "bangers and mash" and "sticky toffee pudding" here, just so as there is something yummy to eat.

All in all though, give yourself time and plenty thereof, to learn the nuances of whatever you putt with, could just be you can save those credits for something which has an eminently noticeable effect on your gameplay, rather than something (i.e -a putter) which the blurb would have you believe you need.

What doesn't your putter do now that you would like it to?

So many putters in my closet gathering dust.

If you want to change then get one that has as high an accuracy and as slow a meter as you can afford.

As with all the clubs offered here you usually learn to play with what you have.

For starters Steve (no pun intended) switch to the other free one in your bag. It has a little accuracy whereas the one you are using has none. Then look up Seveking-he's still using it!   :-)

I'm confused, why are two people saying to use the Beginner putter over the Starter putter?  According to my equipment swap page, it says

Beginner Putter:  0 Precision, 1 Forgiveness, 0 Balance

Starter Putter:  1 Precision, 1 Forgiveness, 0.5 Balance

And Seveking has the Starter Putter equipped.

I think it's a terminology thing, Mag. There are a lot of players that don't realize there are 2 free putters. The Beginner  is just to get started. The Starter is the first upgrade from Beginner. Both of them are in everybody's bag. (Lizzie mentioned an upgrade to "beginner" when I think she meant "Starter".)

Nope, even as I typed I realised I had it about face. I found the starter a bit erratic on speed of meter and so went back to the beginner. Today I rented the ghost putter, so now I have tried every putter available and still keep coming back to the beginner. My reasons for this are the meter speed chiefly, and the fact that I do not entirely believe all the blurb about how good the expensive ones are, when you take into account the really REALLY annoying 15feets scale that defaults on anything under 15ft.

The ghost, despite it being held until the very much later levels, has proven itself unreliable compared to the beginner, in that it comes up short across all of the scales that I tried, which were 15, 25, 50 and 100. Combine this with a very much faster meter speed and you have yourself a whole new learning curve which may in fact, make you a better putter providing your nerves/tolerance will stand the aggravation.

I remain thoroughly unconvinced that I could achieve better stats using any of the putters available, given that I am now so enamoured/familiar with the ease of use offered by the beginner. The use of the putter is so very different to all of the other clubs because of its' intended use, in that your own judgement has to be precise to a far higher degree, and if you get the break/distance right, then your ball should drop whether you fall for the ad mens blurb or not.

In fairness to most putters I have tried, I have not given over quite as much time as I have to my beginner, and as such I realise and acknowledge that my testing is thus necessarily flawed and moreover, biassed, but then I am me uniquely and even I cannot argue with that. Yes I can. No, I can't.

What I can recommend without hesitation though, is the addition of Sago or tapioca granules to your morning porridge mix. Completely Yumm yumm yummy pigs bum.

Your advice is a bit off kilter, Lizzie. You don't upgrade by going backwards. That's your basic downgrade and retreating to the Beginner putter is just that-a downgrade. I use the Ghost putter and find it to be by far the best putter available. Renting for one day does no good, you need to commit to learning it. This can be said for every new club purchase or rental. A couple of rounds with it won't do anything but frustrate you.

Trying to "buy" a better putting stroke is fruitless. The only thing that will get you success is learning the club and practicing with it and this can be said of any club in the Pro Shop. The meter speed will become a non-issue the more you play.
