GROUP 2, ROUND 5, MATCH 4, Tie #3
Carolina Sandhills vs Villains of SEL
tseeqhim vs SPINO1
-----
SPINO1 (Stu) and I finished our match today, and I was very fortunate to escape with a 47-46 win.
We initially set out to play on Tues, 5/1. We got through 11 holes before I had to step away from our match, at the time with a 27-25 lead via Stableford scoring. Stu was kind/understanding enough to agree to delaying the match and resuming it whenever we could do so (today).
We agreed to set up a B9 match on RSG, casually playing holes 10 and 11 before resuming scoring with him teeing off first on the 12th hole.
We both played well, matching birdies on 12 and 17, and matching eagles on the par 5 14th. We got to the 18th tee with me still leading by 2 pts (44-42). He hit a conservative drive with a strong 17-19 mph tailwind, leaving his ball well short of the fairway bunkers. My drive found the fairway just left of the right bunker. "...all you need is par, all you need is par..."
Stu then hit an absolutely brilliant approach and holed out for eagle.
"...all you need is birdie, all you need is birdie..." (not nearly as comforting)
I left my approach 13 ft short, but at least gave myself a chance. With one final read and 'ding', the match was decided when my final birdie putt dropped.
It was a fantastic match. Stu is a great guy and exceptional WGT golfer. I could tell by his approaches (line/location and spin) that he knew exactly what he was doing.
Thanks again, Stu, for the "6-day match" and a great one at that! Best wishes to you and your SEL squad for the remainder of the World Cup.
