Why not using longer range shots with putter?

  Hi there,

  As a fairly skilled player, I found out that I could make "perfect" putter shots (by perfect I mean "ding" thing) by increasing the max shot distance to 150 ft or 300 ft as moving bar would be moving slowly. I have minimal to none difficulty setting up the correct speed but my question is about the direction:

  Is there any disadvantage in terms of direction control when using long range putters for short range shots such as small direction anomalities even with a "perfect" shot?

  Not beyond the normal deviation of the higher scales. I've been putting this way for over 2 years and have zero problems with it.  I use the 50 and 100 scales on my putter more than the rest. :-)

  Exept when you miss ding, it will exaggerate the miss even more (i think)

  Not really, Chris. Practicing the method lets you get to a point where you know how much to miss by (or what you can get away with)  if you're using that style of putting. Dinging is very easy when you use the higher scales and missing a pixel or 2 one the high side of the putt actually helps it hold the line you chose. In fact, for some odd reason, the Ghost handles better this way on certain putts. Like AvatarLee once said, though, ding is king.  ;-)

  With my Ghost, putts between 10 & 25 feet, if i hit ding they go in, but 10 footers, if i miss ding, ball fly's well wide. (Depending on what scale i use the more wide they go, 15 not to bad, 25 gets wide, 50 wider, 100,150 very wide.) Putts up to 6 foot, not so important to hit ding. But if there's a steep slope on a putt, i tend to miss ding sometimes and putt goes in regardless. All this is up to 25 foot remember.

  For LONG putts 50 foot +, a missed ding will really go well wide, so what AvatarLee said is very true.  Since using my ghost putter, i dont know if i've got better at putting or its the Ghost because its ment to be the same as my old redwood, but i can assure you, i wasn't putting half as much 15 - 25 footers as i am now.  I see 12 - 15 footers as easy as i used to see 5-7 footers with my old putter.

  This frustrates the daylights out of me because I'm finding that dinging the Ghost doesn't always get you there. I have no clue why but how do you adjust your line for missing by 1"? You miss the exact same putt time after time by dinging and then discover missing by a pixel nails it. When I first got the putter my impression was that it wasn't lined up with the aimer. Ding after ding would miss. I've gotten away from the missing method but this putter seems to work much better if you do miss, just by that pixel or 2.

  Heh-Maybe my eyes are crooked.  :-D

  Cheers for replies and opinions :). I think I will go this way too as I really fail to get consistent dings on fast bars yet. Any other ideas are welcome too.

  If i miss ding the majority of my putts go wide, maybe i'm aiming differently, and have set up my putts for a dinged shot, but to be honest, i've had sliced putts which i thought would go well wide actually go in.  Its like if your on a hot round, no matter what you do, your putts seam to go in & vice versa.
