Jim is spot on here. When I miss the "ding" slightly in the same direction of the wind it's amazing how much the ball can move.
How much it moves also varies a lot depending on how much spin you put on the ball. OP us using irons with 4.5 spin and balls with 5.2 spin. So if he's hitting approach shots with full back-spin a slight "mis-ding" with the wind blowing in the wrong direction has the potential to move the ball a ton, even on very short shots.
I'm a huge fan of high spin irons and balls. They can be really amazing when hit correctly, but the penalty can be steep on mishits.
