Can anybody tell me what's the best place to be, on the 9th green at Oakmont.  The green on this hole has been destroying me...3,4 putts most of the time grrrrr...lol

    Cheers

Head wind - I like to go for the green.

Tail or crosswinds - Hit in the bunker roughly 15 - 18 yards , use 50 wedge select punch hit  roughly 45 - 50% aim a little to the left & you have a tab in par or hole out..

You want to be short of the hole... & you can use the small hill behind the flag to your advantage (to stop the ball) & can do so from the bunker.

This is my play for par : Hit into green side bunker on 2nd shot, 30/40 lie, hit out to about 1-2 feet slightly right of pin, par putt. I've never been able to do any better than that.

Thanks guys for hints. I would have never thought of hitting into bunker and also using the punch shot... thx again

I lie up on my second shot to the left  of bunker aiming for the fairway or fringe. The key for me is to par this hole but I have birdied it on a few wedge shots from where I laid up. The key is to wedge it in to the left side of the pin much like I do on BP number 15. The ball will roll up about a .5 to 1 foot and then come back down pretty close to within 1-2  feet of the pin as long as I hit the shot right.

in the hole works best for me.

however I tend to lay up 55 yrds short, then lob wedge past the hole with a touch of backspin and if it don't spin back in for a birdie, then par will do.

    cheers

I try to stuff it in the rough just above the bunker, 11-13 yd shot from the rough, then use my full 17 pitch club, if in the bunker, I punch my 60yd wedge and 50-60%.

I still suck a lot on that hole tho.

There are a few ways to play this hole. One is to lay up short of the trap and either use your punch wedge or full shot.I perfer to bail into the bunker and have the 15-18yd sand shot from 30-40.Now it depends on which wedges you use,I use my 60yd wedge, full shot, and hit it just left of the pin about 50% of the meter, with no spin,2 times out of 10 it drops.I never go for the green but thats just me.

I prefer to lay up short of the trap, somewhere in fairway where I leave myself a full or close to it, 64 degree wedge into the pin, I used to put second shot in trap but sometimes would get a weird lie, wasn't always the same, so started thinking that from the fairway I know how the lie will be so started leaving about a 60 yard shot and seems to worl better for me
