why is it that when a ball rolls 20 to 30 ft ON the fairways the ball will dig itself to 30-40?

played allot of Rl and when the ball rolled that far into a bunker it just sat on top of the

sand. i can understand when it lands like a mortar round, but NOT a good long roll

Good question, that's a big difference to real golf.

Just a guess, it is easier to define that a ball entering a bunker is buried 30-40 than to calculate, whether the ball hit the bunker direct or from the fairway etc.

Only WGT can answer this question.

My guess is the programmers really don't understand sand...balls that roll in, then up the bunker slope, then trickle back down should be sitting on top, but (as you know) depending on the course and bunker, you could be buried.

The thing to keep in mind, everybody is playing with the same handicap in traps, rough, etc.

Far as I can tell, in WGT the bunkers are rated by the texture of the sand in them, not the way you land in them. In other words, bunkers at Bethpage and Kiawah tend to always be 15/20, most other courses 30/40, all the time. Not realistic, but hey.

It would not seem too difficult for WGT to add some variety in this respect, with your odds of getting a plugged lie increasing depending on the trajectory. If the ball bombed directly into the sand, you might for example have a 30% chance of having a lie that is 60/70% buried, while if the ball rolled into the sand you might have a 40% chance of a 5/10% lie and a 50% chance of 15/20% lie, and a 10% chance of a 30/40% lie.

This would be different for Kiawah, which has hard sand where it is unlikely you would get a plugged lie.
