Driver Opinions: G10 L58 or R9 L62

  Are you talking about the L62 or L80 one here?  My L62 doesn't seem to be able to manage it, even on a perfect hit.  Maybe the L80 will.......

  It is not rubbish. The lower trajectory bores into the wind. Which is why the L80 R9 can and does out drive the L88 R11 into a stiff headwind. True using backspin will keep the ball in the air longer but the higher trajectory clubs with backspin into a stiff headwind will lose distance. It stays in the air longer so the wind can push it back further. And the lower trajectory will make the ball roll a little further after it lands. It is carry vs roll. With a stiff tailwind the higher trajectory clubs get more carry but most often less roll. And most of the best players recommend using topspin at St.Andrews to take the best advantage of the harder rolling fairways.

  Thanks for all the replies guys. I really appreciate it. Seems the R9 is the overwhelming favorite. Do you guys that have used or have the R9 put backspin on the club for tight fairways like Oakmont, Bestpage and Congressional? I'm used to my mid/high Rapture. I hardly ever miss the fairway with this forgiving club.

  I use backspin with a tail wind, gets the ball higher so it carries further. For head wind I use topspin, keeps it low and minimises the effect of the wind.  Cross wind I tend to use no spin.

  I'm not a gr8 player, but your post is spot on. Makes it extremely nice for holes like rsg #2!

  Weather or not I put BS or TS on a drive depends more on the fairway than the wind.

   

  If you need carry, you definitely want BS.. even into a head wind

  Regardless of how strong?  I use top above about 10 mph. Always ready to learn new tricks though.

  I'll use BPB #5 for an example. The fairway is well below the tee. This allows you to carry it under most winds. Putting top spin on that drive into a 10mph headwind is just asking for trouble. You will not have enough loft to carry it, and end up in the bunker. BS into that same headwind will likely get you onto the fairway.

  Equipment depending of course...

  Someone just posted recently that a little less than 1/2 bs into a headwind minimized what you lost in distance. I use bs on all drives except for certain SA holes/winds. The carry invariably outdistances the roll.

  Something you can try in practice that works pretty good is to aim way against the wind and miss the swing in the direction of the wind with full backspin. You can get some serious carry doing that but be careful to allow for it.
