I have had the experience of playing on sand greens, It is a lot of work, lol and takes a long time to play a round. Amazingly enough the putting is pretty good if the group ahead of you does a proper job of dragging the green with the mat.

Bomb craters, No Ascension Island golf club

diesel fuel is poured on to the greens which are called browns to stop them blowing away. miss the ash fairways you'll be watching your ball ping off the lava

ONE BOAT GOLF CLUB. Proud to be the worst golf course in the world

had the pleasure of playing this unforgetable course in 1982 when stationed there during the Falklands war.

I stopped by there a for few days at the same time. We were training on different landing craft techniques, weapons training and at the end of the day we would run road around the island road in full kit ( what is that about 12 miles?) before going back on ship. All i remember about the place that it was very hot and looked like the surface of the moon. We went in the RX one day after a grueling day out in the sun to get some soda, but the manager had just closed and refused to sell us anything... unbelievable when you consider what was happening on the island at that time. Then in a short time we went from about 95 degrees to - 10/15 . If i knew there was a golf course there i would have packed my sand wedge..lol

i remember the island well as i was there for over 14 weeks. wasn't it the PX i could be wrong. next door to it was the pool hall were i spent the first 3 nights on the island sleeping on the floor with another 30 people. over the road was the Volcano club with the outdoor cinema screen and baseball diamond. we were found a bungalow in Georgetown over looking the harbour that was in a stones throw of the two bars, the exile bar that we were banned from after a group of british marines wrecked it, and the saints bar where we drank most of the time.

one story i remember is walking with a friend one night from georgetown to the american base a walk of a few miles, when a army landrover pulled up with 3 SAS soldiers aboard and asked if we wanted a lift they were only going to the turn off for two boats but would give us a lift to the turn off. we jumped in the back only to be met by beer cans rolling about in the back. we were told o help ourselves to a few cans which we did and after getting dropped off we drank the cans walking the rest of the way. the next day we learnt that the shop on the island had been broken into and 4 crates of beer had been stolen and did anybody know anything about it. we didn't fancy a visit from our SAS friends so kept quiet lol.
