My two cents. I am new to WGT having joined the last week of August 2018. It’s a great, very realistic application that very closely mimics golf in the real world. The decision you are pondering is one I have already faced and I can share my experience. You’ve heard the expression you drive for show and you putt for dough. The biggest scoring opportunities are from 100 yds in. However, in order to maximize those opportunities you need to get there first. That was my dilemma and what I elected to do was replicate the bag I had when I played actual golf. I replaced my irons almost immediately with a lower rated set of medium trajectory Cobras. I shortly thereafter replaced driver with a Big Bertha and putter with the Ping Anser. That met my needs for the first several months. When I was moved back in tees I realized a change in gear would be necessary if I wanted to play at my previous level. I replaced my driver and putter first, moving to the M1 and the Versa respectively. I replaced my hybrid with a Ping hybrid (a mistake in my opinion that thankfully was pointed out by some very experienced players). My irons were upgraded to a higher level. I played all the equipment for about two weeks and reassed. Driver and putter were good, irons were not primarily because of the trajectory and a rather dodgy problem with distance. So the irons were replaced a third time with a set of high trajectory Hogan’s, probably what I should have done in the first place. It was at this point that is several forum inquiries I was advised to ditch the hybrid and pick up a 64 degree wedge. I was not comfortable with giving it up, but was eventually glad that I did. It took about two weeks to acclimate to the new set up and many times I questioned whether I had made a mistake in upgrading, but in the end I was more than satisfied. So, when I finished, I had a M1 driver, a Versa putter, Hogan irons, and a set of 3 Cleveland wedges, 56, 60, and 64 degree. Was it expensive? Yes, but some of that expense was offset by credits earned through video watching and survey completion. I believe the whole question boils down to what you are comfortable with and what level of performance you wish to achieve. The biggest benefit of this experience is that it allowed me to duplicate my performance level in real life while at the same time permitted me to make significant improvements in skill sets that were lacking in my real game. In short my playing experience was enhanced. So in my case, the dollars and time invested in surveys, etc were worth it. Not really a true and complete cost benefit analysis but rather a brief description of what I went through as I contemplated the decision you are posing for yourself. One last note. Throughout this process I relied on the forum boards and the advice of more senior players and found those sources of information of immense value.
