I know part of golf is positioning your approach for an optimal uphill putt but it sure seems like every putt on every course inside of 6 feet as at least a foot and a half of break in it..

Kirkster, now different people have different styles of putting..The "aim the arrow" group, and the "miss the ding mark" group.

I'll go over the "miss the Ding mark" . Always miss the ding mark to the side the putt is breaking FROM. The larger the break...the more you miss the ding (the putt power needs to be adjusted , as the more you miss the ding, the more power is sapped from putt).

Personally I am not talented enough or smart enough to "aim by the arrow". It is probably that I haven't just developed the "true line feel". I only use the aim arrow to negate some of the break out of the "big breakers".

    But that's just me.

I tried "aim the arrow" but switched to miss the ding.  I think it works a little better for me.

Haven't notice every putt under 6' to have the foot + break.  Depends on the course with SA having huge breaks ...  lol

I never use the marker arrow to adjust my putts, I use memory from the lines on the green and break accordingly. I am not the best putter in the world but my GIR has gone up 3 percent since a couple of days ago, I dont try to make every birdie if I no I cant, I will get it close to par it.

I have never been able to use the arrow flag, so I stay the way I do it and have fun. OakMont is a Biatch to putt so are some holes at Kiawah.

I'm guessing the best putters aim the arrow and hit the ding. That's what I do but sure as hell am not a good putter.

I guess the name tells you most of what you need to know, but here goes anyway..

Short putts (<3 foot-ish) - heavy on pace, and miss the ding on the appropriate side. Have to confess that the main reason I started doing this was time-saving and laziness, but I've stuck with it and it seems to work, especially compared to trying to read the curl and get  it dead-weight)

Medium and upwards - always reverse view, try to read the gradient, move the arrow, and go for the ding.

Be interesting to know what the big boys do.

most aim and ding and if they miss its on the high side, but what ever works for you is the way to go.

Thanks - I guess the problem is that it doesn't work for me  :)

I do miss mostly on the low side, which is an "amateur" mistake in the real world as well.

I believe a combination of the two styles is best for me, adding that the most radical breaking putts can be best handled by very radical, contrary misshits.
