In my short time playing this game I have learned a lot, watched Youtube vids and whatnot.

Have gotten fairly decent at calculating distance with wind and elevations. However, Bethpage Black #9 approach shot has me baffled... 177 yards 2-4 mph tailwind and 4 feet elevated hole with full backspin this hole acts like Im shooting at a green that is 35 feet elevated! My shots are landing 30-40 yards short. Am I doing something wrong or is this approach shot simply glitchy?

I am certainly no expert here, but you will find some holes just play differently than the stated distances.  One has to make mental (or written, for me) notes of these cases and adjust accordingly.

However, I think if you are 30-40 yards shot here, something else must be off in the calcs.  However, I play with different clubs and ball and I don't remember how it played with the "rock" (starter ball).  Usually had to hit it short and let it roll - but not that short.  Note that the starter ball and lower level equipment has a greater variability in results from shot to shot than higher level equipment so some of that will be reduced as you move up.

Hard to say - maybe someone else will chime with better help than I can offer.
