I'm not so good with words in English, but I'll do my best. Putting, as some say .. is an art..and a difficult one. First I start with the distance... Depending on speed... you will have to use the actual distance of ur meter.. or more... or less. For Tournament greens.. I have to use less than the distance my putter scale says. If I have a 15 ft putt.. I go somewhere around 12(add 1 extra foot if arrow is pointing up even if it says 0 in) Check always the arrow that indicates uphill and downhill... could mean a lot, especially with short putts... some people complain about being short on those but they simply think that 7ft arrow pointing up is actually 7... it's more (at least that's how I see it) the other thing to consider is that is if you want to play the break or just hit it hard so it doesn't break much, the latter is risky in downhill putts cause you may end up very far from the hole if you miss.. that is because you have to hit it harder in order to make the putt straighter, thus.. if u fail.. see you putting longer than u would like to. If you play with the break.. then you probably need to aim farther from the hole than it really seems.. but hitting it softer.. and trying not to hit it so soft that it doesn't reach the hole. For shorter putts, I prefer hitting it a bit harder and using less break... the distance between the arrow and the hole being closer. For longer ones.. I play the break... giving it more distance right or left of hole as you get farther, but also if it is downhill and the little dots are moving faster or slower. Take a look at the color of the grid.. red or blue.. If the putt is uphill you may want to hit it with less break than for the same distance downhill.
Whats the real distance to the hole? Not what it says all the time... You have to add or subtract inches up or down to the feet.. then use more or less(usually less) with the meter.. the longer the distance.. the more you take from ur putter meter.. how much? I can't tell exactly how much. For 15 I use around 12 if it is flat.. or around 13 if I want to hit it straighter and it is uphill..so if I miss.. it will go maybe a couple of ft passed.. still puttable. For 30... something around 25, for 60.. around 48-50... for 70 around 56-58.. Beware of big descending slopes... like in Oakmont 2 or Bethpage (15?), this doesn't always apply there in all the greens as balls speed up when going down a very steep downhill. I am, of course referring to tournament greens, but if you are playing against a legend.. they are even faster! For legend greens and 15 ft putt.. 10-11 is enough, provided it's flat. 2 or 3 inches down.. then maybe something around 7 or 8 could be more than enough.
Another thing... all greens are not the same. for some reason, Kiawah dots are fast in some holes and you get an almost straight putt while in others there's a real tough break ahead. Playing the courses regularly and making notes(even mentally) can help. This is not a dictionary for every one, just some hints on how I do it.. some may have better ideas or putt better and think this is rubbish. I get away with a putt in many times while others I keep wondering what went wrong in that putt, like so many others. Hope you get something useful out of it.
Good luck!
