in the rules of golf , when you ball hits in bounds and then rolls out of bounds , you drop ball no closer too the hole were it went out of bounds. how come wgt puts you back on the tee box ?

yeahhhh...not so much. If your ball goes out of bounds.....it's out of bounds....stroke and distance.  hit again from the original spot.

You're wrong I'm afraid. Out of bounds from your drive is 3 from the tee.

You drop the ball where it went out of bounds only according to "casual saturday morning foursome with the buddies, don't want to do the walk of shame back to the tee" rules

Yeah it is the walk of shame , done it my fair share too . To avoid that shame, as in the rules of golf,  we just hit a provisional. Find the org ball p/u and save the 3 off the tee .

edit..  just thought about the OB , 3 off the tee it is , provisional doesn't apply.

Check out the Rules of Golf for specifics.  But as I interpret the rule, a provisional ball is played to save time in case there's a chance the original ball is lost (outside a water hazard) or OB.  If a player proceeds without playing a provisional ball, then determines the original ball is lost (outside a hazard) or OB, another ball must be played as near as possible at the spot from where the original ball was last played, stroke and distance penalty.  If the original ball is neither lost (outside a water hazard) or OB, the provisional ball is abandoned and play continues with the original ball.

I'm not certain  , should check I guess . I have always played you can't take your ball from OB and drop it at nearest relief if it is played from the tee box , only a fairway shot . Even after hitting a provisional though you are still entitled to a 5 min period to identify your first ball , if not you play your provisional or take the walk of shame back to the tee .  I've seen players tee off a few balls out of the box trying to land 1 in bounds  ala Tin Cup style but from the tee box . Curious as to the exact ruling .

It doesn't matter which shot goes out of bounds....it's back to the original spot...meaning, if you hit your second out of bounds on a par 4...or  your 3rd on a par 5, 3rd on a par 4, etc....you still incur the stroke and distance penalty and replay from the spot where you hit the errant shot. The "do it again + a one stroke penalty" penalty does not just apply to tee shots.

This is one of the more simple rules in golf hit it OB and back to where you hit your last shot. stroke and distance penalty. Don't know what kind of rules you play by but in no circumstances to you drop it at the point it went OB.

T he exception to the tee rule i believe is when there is a DROP ZONE. Take for example number 17 at TPC SAWGRASS. Short par 3 with water everywhere. On this hole there is a such thing as a DROP ZONE. Im not exactly sure when the rule always applys but i have played in ameteur tournies locally and some holes do have a certain area for certain tees called Drop Zone.
