S. Lowry for me in The Open. I am not big on picking repeats and I have other preferences but they were used.
On the course, no question. The European Club 30 miles south of Dublin. Right on the Irish Sea. spectacular links course. I played it 21 years ago, 1 month after Tiger (in his prime) did, and the owner (he was there when we checked in) was nearly in tears explaining Tiger's 65 which was then (maybe still now) the course record. He assumed that was impossible. He said the course was designed so par was the best score. I shot a 90 and I rank that as the best round of my life (I was an 11 handicap at the time. I was playing off the regular men's tees, not pro tees, but the wind was howling).
My friends and I had heard about the course which is allegedly public. My 5 star hotel and travel agency said they couldn't get us on but when in Dublin, the hotel concierge said talk to the Willie the bell hop... he plays there every weekend. Willie got us in, and refused a $50 tip after we came back. He said "you looked like serious golfers. That's why I let you on. Don't want a tip."
Tom.
PS. At least back then, carts were only available if you were handicapped. Walking the course was required. They also had 2 extra par 3's tucked in which didn't count on the scorecard, but we could play 20 holes. Players option to play or skip them.
