"Deleted"  It is ok Scott, you are allowed to say "bits". The rest was a head scratcher. LMAO, Must be a British thing.

It wasn't that I thought it might be offensive Steff, more dull really. Without the benefit of facial expressions when talking face to face, posting in a forum, it's not always easy to know how your post is going to be taken. I'll put it back because it might strike a chord with some of you.  : )

Interesting! That's how French folks* call it, too, with little different spellings. (* France, not here in Québec which is another league of slangs.)

    +1

I'd say this is the root of 99.9999% of all online misunderstanding & miscommunication.

My dad would use rather antiquated terms for things sometimes. He would refer to magazines, or comics as I was a kid, that you purchased regularly as 'periodicals'. I don't recall ever hearing anyone else call them that.

I think my dad just thought of children as small adults and therefore he could talk to them in the same way that he spoke to everyone else.

When I was younger, in school, and at our Library, it was never called the "magazine rack" or magazine section, etc. It was always referred to as the "periodical" rack, or section.

I read, in different thread, your inquiry as to gifs v. memes, curious as to whether it had to do with this thread and my comment (please no memes). LOL - Thought maybe you were looking for a work around.

I love reading these replies. It makes me think back as to all the things I was told by my parents, growing up, some as a result of reaching a goal, achievement or doing something well, as well as those said by doing something quite the opposite - LMAO.

I had originally thought the responses would be golf related. Talk about lost in translation! Turned out so much better.

Probably because periodicals are not only limited to magazines, but also refer to ANY regular (periodic) publications such as newspapers, etc.

People in Spain, for instance, call newspapers "periódicos", don't they?

Dad..."Is this what you're going to do until you graduate?  Who's paying for the next quarter?

Mom..."I expected this from Andy...but you?

No details...but the above were hilarious lines at the time.

As a young kid being washed in the bath by mum, I had to do my bits myself, and they were referred to by mum as, "your how do you do's", lol.

Sounds like something craigswan would post.

I "googled" (at some point in time, googled became a goto word), "Things our parents would say" and found the top 25 things, any sound familiar?

    1) Don’t make me repeat myself!

    2) You’re not going anywhere until you finish your meal.

    3) Did you brush your teeth?

    4) Deal with it.

    5) Get in the car.

    6) Go to your room.

    7) I don’t care of what Carla’s mom thinks. If you do, ask Santa for another mom.

8 ) Are you done with your homework?

    9) No TV tonight.

    10) Stop it.

    11) Hurry up!

    12) Have some fruit.

    13) Say “please.”

    14) Say “thank you.”

    15) Shush!

    16) Stop hitting your sister!

    17) What did your teacher say?

    18) What did I tell you?

    19) You’re just like your dad.

    20) You’re just like your mom.

    21) When I was your age…

    22) I never had all these toys!

    23) Give Grandma a kiss.

    24) Say hello to Mr. Green.

    25) You’ll understand when you have kids.”

Surprisingly, the one I would hear most often is not on the list...

WAIT TILL YOU FATHER GET'S HOME

When we heard that one, and later we hear the back door opening, knowing it was Dad, we would start stuffing the pillow down the back of our pants.  I always wondered why the belt was used, seems so impersonal. I often think it was because use of the belt allowed for plausible deniability, "I never raised a hand".!

Sorry Scott, I was sure yours would be on the list.
