What are some techniques to play from the rough, especially around the green. I often flub too many shots. Thanks!

    Rule 1: Distrust your caddie!
The automatic choice of club + shot type disregards the turf and fails in most instances. It's worst around the greens.

With your Starter equipment, only use full or punched shots to get on the green out of the rough! Be aware though that they are highly non-linear to power and unlikely to work properly below 60%.

Rule 2: Use Pitch and Chip shots only when they land on the fairway or green!
    Otherwise, they will get stuck.

Rule 3: If you're into buying any clubs, get yourself a short(!) wedge ASAP (50 or 60 yds). The L39 64° TaylorMade is my recommendation.

Another shot option, with a custom wedge, is a flop shot.

    Vilcababa:

Around the green:  With the starter clubs and starter ball, always use full backspin.  Your best bet, in most cases, with that equipment, is to use a flop shot.  That will help you control the roll-out.  However, if the green is sloping uphill from your landing area to the pin, you can try a pitch shot.

From further away:  Use a full shot or a punch shot, as alosso stated.  Again, use full backspin.

If you do use a chip shot, even from short grass, you must be only about 3-5 yards off the green.  The caddy will often suggest a chip from 10 yards off.  That won’t work.  Ever.
