This has been likely been discussed before, but I've only been playing and reading the forums for a few weeks now and have not seen anything.

I am curious why part of the time, when in a bunker or the rough that is dictated by a certain %, I can practically ignore the % number given and hit a normal shot and it works out perfectly, yet other times the % number given is actually applied and very much affects the shot.

There appears to be no rhyme or reason to knowing which situation you have landed in, unless you have played the shot before.  This seems especially true for the CTTH challenges.

I can't pretend the % is always in place, cause then I will sail the green a large portion of the time.  However, I also can not ignore the %, because sometimes I end up coming up way short, which is also frustrating.

I understand there are a few random variables in the game, but sometimes they are very drastic and can seriously detract from the enjoyment of the game.

I was just wondering if this is common occurrence or is there a way to recognize which situation you are in ahead of time, without having already played the shot before?

The lie % is the % of your ball that is covered. I did the same thing as you when I started - in the 30-40% rough with 60 yards to the green. I thought I'd play 100 yards and saw it sail past.

With better clubs, you hit the ball out of hazards much easier and with more spin. Even with rudimentary clubs, first-cut rough can basically be played as if from the fairway.

The best thing to do is to take notes. Most bunkers on, say, BPB are 15-20% and can be escaped easily. But the different bunkers or roughs on different courses will play differently, so practise is probably your key. Try playing different types of shots from each situation.

There are some excellent tips around these forums, so have a quick search or look in the FAQs or Tips sections for some extra help.

    Jack.

I thinks its pretty simple........ 15%......ignore it.

    30-40%.......Trust it.

There ya go......there are no fried egg lies in the traps here.

Stick to the basics and make the shot.......or at least try.

    Thanks for reading...... Hac.

You have to consider the loft of the club.  A 6 iron hit out of 30-40 rough isn't going to get up at all -if you land back into trouble that shot might only carry 100 yards. Meanwhile your 9i will get the ball up easier and might even have more carry than your 6 or even 7 iron out of the same rough.

hitting out of rough / bunker effects the trajectory and the spin - so you will often get a lot more roll than you otherwise would from the fairway. When you do hit from the rough and carry to the green with a mid or long iron, sometimes the ball will roll out to what the club might even carry from the fairway.

You can't just consider the lie, you have to consider the shot in context.

Also missing the ding in bunkers or rough can just simply result in a very poor shot.
