Punching above your weight?

  Is it my imagination, or was there once a super-secret bonus for punching above your weight? Let's say I'm in a ranked game against similarly ranked players, and I shoot -2. My average might drop a skosh. But if I shot -2 against Tour Champions (and got killt) my average would drop more. The thought makes me more amenable to accepting - and continuing - games where I'm hopelessly outclassed. But is it a thing?

  Not in ranked games, as, for average purposes, players don't compete but play against the course.

  In "rated" Match Play (no practice, no head-to-head), you gain towards tier promotion by winning against higher tiers, and also by winning credits in strokeplay tournaments.
