In no way am I writing this to disparage other players, but as I play in the Coin rooms, I usually view my opponents' profiles and notice their habits, and have found some rather curious things like:

Removing the flagstick. This really has little or no effect on the tee shot, except maybe on a par 3 where there is an exceptionally small chance it'll help in getting a hole in one.  I will claim that for me, I have always left it in on every ace I have made, so there's my proof. Same goes for nearly all of my chip / pitch / flop ins. Removing it on par 4 or 5 tee shot? I don't get it. Secondly, except while on the fringe, the stick appears on the green only as a visual reference. It really isn't there.  When a putt is made, the stick vanishes, so really it has no effect on whether the ball goes in or not.

The 3-hybrid wood. I've seen many players who've chosen to keep some of their starter clubs, but the most common one kept seems to be the 3-hybrid wood. This trait transcends through all tiers from Pro to Champion. I guess if a more effective club is not needed, well okay.

Three wedges and no hybrid wood. I understand if it can be compensated with a high-end irons set. But when all three wedges have exactly the same yardage? I can't see any advantage in that.

If anyone can offer me reasoning that removing the stick, going back to my starter 3 wood, or have three nearly identical wedges is going to improve my game, by golly, I'll do it.

that makes no sense to me. No advantage there.

I have 40+ HIO's and all were achieved by removing the pin and all but 1 were achieved in the old flash version of this game. The other day I got lucky and had a 271 yard double eagle with the pin in so yes the ball will go in with the pin still in but I have also missed many birdies and eagle but not removing the pin, and sometimes the ball has done some crazy bounces off of the pin. Cheers

I agree having 3 wedges of same distance makes no sense. But I've literally never seen anyone do that. Almost all players I've seen with 3 wedges carry 56, 60, and 64 degree wedges. Those 3 wedges make a lot of sense.

Additionally, I'm in the camp that carrying a hybrid makes no sense. Since I've been playing, the conventional wisdom has always been drop the hybrid and carry 3 wedges, with specs noted above. My 64-degree wedge has saved me more strokes than any other club in my bag.

When you check the specs for a type of wedge in the Pro shop, it generally Lists all three degrees of the same brand/level.  The OP may not be looking at them all separately and thinks the three wedges of the opponent are the same when they are not.

which may be odd loft ° or odd distances, or another number of wedges.

Risking a bigger gap on top but filling up at the low end has been in practice here from 2010 / 2011. Rather than looking at the lofts, I'm looking at the nominal distances (100% shot power) given. They should start low, @50 or 60 yds, and go in even spacings below the PW. The punch and flop shots give further nominal distances.

    Speaking only for myself:

I generally remove the flag on every shot that has a chance to reach the hole.

    - I do this when putting because the flag stick typically blocks the grid line and I’m somewhat of a dot counter.

    - I do this with other shots because I’ve hit the flagstick many times when leaving it in, and it’s never a good outcome.  For me, I’m better off with no flagstick and landing just past the hole.

I also dropped the hybrid for a 3rd wedge and go 64, 60, and 56 degrees.
60yds, 80yds, and 100yds respectively.  Keeping your shots in the 80-100% power range with these clubs gives the player access to excellent precision once you learn the tendencies of the club, your ball, and the terrain features.

Newer players need more distance off the fairway than another wedge. Makes sense to keep the hybrid until longer irons are acquired.

As for same wedges, it just looks like it in the pro shop. Never heard of anyone carrying the same wedges

The third, longest, wedge only makes sense when there is enough "space" below the PW. With Starter or low level irons, two wedges are enough.
