'Hide Flag' Suggestion

  This is one place where I prefer the "real life" and the online versions should diverge and separate from one another.

  My experience is that the hole can be VERY difficult to see in most cases.  (Sadly I am not landing every approach within 5 feet - often it is more like 15.  Or 50.)

  That being the case, I like it the way it is - only on a small majority of shots do I "Remove" the Flagstick.  

  If the default changed, I would have to click "Replace" Flagstick probably 75-80% of the time - needless clicking that I do not have to do right now - and would prefer to avoid.

  That's my 2 cents in respectful disagreement with your idea.

  I think my view falls in line with yours on this, which is why I added to this the possibility of separating the default behavior so that putts and all other shots are two different defaults. For me, it makes sense to pull it for putts, and leave it in for all others to handle the scenarios being described here.

  I think the final answer lies somewhere in between, and it needs to be a consideration to have users define their own preference, where in the same game and the same same shot, some can see the flag, while others may have it hidden.
