This happens a lot: I have a 15-25% lie, hitting an iron, hit it right on the money, i.e. on the 'ding' and it only travels about 60% of the distance listed for the club. Why does this happen so frequently? Is there a flaw in the software?

    hi

rough prevents the irons from cleanly striking the ball. many times, with longer irons, the ball will not get full trajectory/given distance. you have to use other ways to attack the hole, such as punch.

higher end clubs can combat rough with better success.

Not a flaw, just the game telling you that entry clubs aren't that good, and perform badly from the rough, where as higher end clubs will hit from that lie with little or no loss to distance. So when in that situation you may wish to use a punch shot to get out, or go up a club to gain more distance.

Not sure with your clubs, but suggest you try a few variations and note down what works, and what doesn't. If you do this in practice mode you can have try this and not effect your average.

Thank you for the reply... now I have a new related question..

I purchased a new G10 3 wood. Frequently I will make what appears to be a good shot, i.e. hit the ding, play the wind, if any, right, etc. The screen says a specific distance, and I play the shot to at least reach the distance listed...yet the shot only goes maybe half the distance shown. I'm even talking about a level shot..i.e. no elevation. I.e., distance shows 215 yds, club should travel 225 max, ball goes 140 yards??, why is this happening? All this on fairway lie...

Thank you in advance for an answer...

    hi

can you provide a bit more details, like what hole, were u hitting from fairway, how far, elevation, wind...

if you can save a replay it would be great and be sure to right click on the game window and submit a bug report so we can analyze it.

Ok, so I thought I would put this to the test....

Went into a practice mode game at the Island course. Max hits is 10 so I tried a few things with no success until I reached third hole.

I played 2 shots, and got on green. putted 300 off green and got to 48 yrds, have Z tp 64 deg. wedge. tried 3 diff shots from the same place and got 3 diff results in distance.  wind was 14 going to right.... I hit the same wedge all 3 times, hit bottom spin all 3 times. missed ding only sightly on 3rd try. .. The wedge says it goes 50 yds with full hit. It went 46 1st time, 45 second time and 48 third time. Now these are very close but my question is,,,,

"Why does it happen so often and why, sometimes, such a drastic difference between what the club says it will do and what it does??? All my clubs are medium price clubs. Only ones consistent are the Driver, (R9,8.5), the 3 wood, (G10,3 wood), and wedges, most of the time,(except for little differences like I mentioned earlier). Even my 'beginner' putter is more consistent than the irons,, (G10 steel).. So there ya go...

Next time, I will save a few replays,, thanks for any help..

Putting bottom on the ball reduces the distance. How much depends on how much is used. There are  varied degrees of side wind each will effect the balls flight distance differently.

Factors that effect distance are; Missing the Ding, elevation, wind speed/direction/gusts, use of top/bottom, ground surface/break to name a few. Each course does play different and your clubs length will vary accordingly.

You resurrected a four year old thread to post a forward slash?

However, it is still the most sensible of your posts in it.

Since the thread is resurrected already.... this reminds me of one of my favorite academic stories.

So I'm in a curriculum meeting in which one of our programs is proposing a change to the title of one of their majors. One of the faculty members decides to vote against the proposal solely because "it uses a backslash in the title."

Yup, based solely on a the use of the slash, the faculty member votes "no." But here's the thing: it was actually a forward slash not a backslash. It took everything within me to not blurt out, "You idiot. If you're going to vote against something for as pedantic of a reason as that, you should at least get the terminology correct. It's a forward slash. Sheesh!"

But on the proposal, she was the only "no" vote, so I let it go.
