I used to have Itunes going, but a better meter was achieved by having good old LP's playing in the background.
Johnny Winter,Led zeppelin, Rollin Stones, and Dark Side of the Moon all work for me.

I've found a good alternative is SPOTIFY. Uses much less CPU bandwidth and can be minimized to the task tray. Doesn't affect my meter at all and you can listen to ALMOST any artist.
