ok, I'll probably take flack fro this, but:
I'm not a fan of Bethpage Black. I think it's a gimmicky and contrived course. I thought so when they played there for real, and I'm sure of it now. The endless elevated greens or the bottle neck approaches to the same green configurations simply aren't thoughtful or clever. It is extremely difficult, no doubt, but it has a plastic quality that I don't care for.
I'm not saying it doesn't kick my ass, and badly. Especially 15 and 16. I lay up on 15 to try to hit a wedge shot that will rolll back to the hole. When I miss I can walk away with an 8. Easy.
That's my two cents. I'd like to see full 18s of Pinehurst. Or Whistling Straights. that's a hell of a golf course.
