I hope I'm not opening up a sore subject here, but I have a question...mostly for Icon if he's available to answer. Is it possible for the green speed to be wrong.  I just played a Ready Go on the Best of Famous and I had an issue there. It was marked as a Tourney green speed.

My first couple of putts went in nicely, but I approached them to within 4 feet. After that, I had some land 10-17 feet away.  Those putts came up 1.5-2.5 feet short...not the norm with me. I have a pretty good handle on the greens.  I then started hitting putts as if it were Very Fast greens and sure enough they were dropping like they should.

Now, don't give me the "Two different tourney speed" argument.  I know what I'm talking about and I know how to hit Very Fast greens.  I'm just curious if it's possible to mark the greens wrong.

    Hey Long,

I know you don't want to hear the 2 greens biz but it's probably the case.  I put the "slow" tourney speeds just like very fast.  Just sucks we don't find out which speed they are until we have a 15 footer.  Not much difference between the 2 tourney speed inside 8 feet but there is a good 2 foot difference that graduates outside 15 feet.

Still absolutely moronic that we still even have to have this discussion.  Why WGT created two different green speeds and called them the same thing.

...but to answer you question, it's absolutely possible they listed the speeds wrong.  WGT has established a pretty steady pattern of mislabeling things like the course the tourney is played on, wind speeds, date tourney starts, equipment specs, yardages to pins, etc.  Just like the rest of us, they aren't impervious to mistakes, they just seem to enjoy making them more than the rest of us.

I agree with Jake on this one. We can't always expect WGT to be flawless. As the players, we just have to roll with the punches, otherwise our rounds will suffer with the lack of made putts. I just hope that this "problem" can be fixed in a short amount of time, as putting  is the MOST important aspect of anyone's golf game.

    Jake,

Thanks for the response.  I am not blind to the fact that there are 2 different green speeds with the same name, and I'm with you as to not understanding as to why this is.  These just seemed extra slow...no way in hell it was even the 'slower' tourney greens.  It was definitely "Very Fast".

Not that I'm hurting for credits...but it stings more in a RG than in some meaningless stroke play round. Two strokes in a RG can be the difference in 20 spots higher in the rankings.

    Icon,

Thanks for the response.  I really didn't want to feel like that guy... you know, "complainer guy".  As a matter of fact, I have a long history of being on WGT's side.  I just wanted to know if that was possible, or if something else had come about that I wasn't aware of.

    Thanks,

    -Long

You're definitely not mistaken for that guy.  Think I wrapped that title up long ago!  I live to make work for Icoont.

I suggested a couple years ago that WGT change to a numerical system  ie.. stimp meter..... for green speeds.

it's a mystery why they won't change... it would take almost no effort on their part, and would make the game less frustrating.

I agree with Jake.... There is more than one Tourny Speed green and more than one Champ Speed too.. Not sure about the rest of em, but might be more than one speed aswel.

I was putting on a Champ speed green the other day, using the same clicks on the meter as Tourny speed green, which I thought was great until later on in the round, it got to the real Champ Speed and Killed me and couldn't adapt quickly enough....lol.

I dont think you're wrong at all. I played a TM in matchplay lastnight, and obviously the green speed shows as Tournament, but my putts were coming 0.5-1.5ft short for the first three holes.

I changed my read to Very Fast, and they all landed in the hole, something is DEFINITELY going on, anyone can argue the fact, but its been seen by quite a few people.

I even got a calculator out and tested the green speed, hitting the appropriate speed and still coming short with no break.

I used ((Distance+2ft)*0.7) = Total. Obviously subtracting a FT for every foot downhill and adding a FT for every foot uphill. Fell short on three attempts

Changed to *0.8 which is Very Fast green speed, and Perfect. If I did miss, it was only 0.2-1ft past the hole.
