THE SERVERS ARE CRAP,,OVERLOADED,END OF DISCUSSION,, WGT SERVERS PING AT AROUND 190..THATS OK FOR A NORMAL GAME BUT NOT ONE AS SENSITIVE AS THIS..FIND A SERVER THAT PINGS AT HALF THAT AND WE WILL SEE A DIFFERENT GAME..

    @Priestess

I am no expert on the technicalities of the game, but from memory (previous discussions) -  I dont think the "ping" rate has much top do with our problem.

Priestess not sure what ISP you have but most local loop try to give you the fastest stable speed they can up to the max. The one thing I found that caused problems with meter performance was CRC errors as highlighted in http://www.wgt.com/forums/t/7363.aspx  . My cure was to force a connection at a higher SNR rate slowing my DSL speed down.

So in my case I conclude quality of connection is more important than speed.

My current ping to WGT is 201ms with no meter problems.

If you are playing a "first person" shooter game with other people, high ping times are surely a bad thing.  They will cause lag in an extremely time critical environment.

Slow ping times here do not have the same effect.  Shot timing information is not dependent so much on internet speeds.  The way I understand it is that when you take your shot (which is controlled on the local machine), all the information about the way you hit the shot is gathered and sent to the WGT servers for a result.  The result then comes back and they display what they calculate the outcome to be.  This is supported by the fact that you can disable your internet connection, take your shot, go get a drink, take a pit stop and then come back and re-enable your connection, and it will still take the shot.

The difference being that in a first person shooter game, if your shot result does not get back to the server before your opponents', you're SOL because the server thinks your opponent shot first.  The only thing a high Ping rating could do here is cause longer loading times and more of the occasional 'asset load timeouts'.

A high ping MIGHT cause a game to lag, but it is not necessarily attributed to an overloaded server. When you ping a server, you are traversing many network devices between your PC and the target. Any one of those devices could cause ping times to increase, including traffic on the network itself.

I find it interesting that everyone blames the server(s) when you have no idea of it's specs or how many users are accessing it any one time. I'm not educated enough to know exactly what could cause a Flash game like WGT to be sluggish, but if you are going to assume that something outside of your PC is the culprit, than you have to take in consideration that there are certain times of the day and week that internet traffic increases. Friday nights and weekends would probably be two of those times.

Exactly.  And how do you think companies that have high traffic rates at particular times get around performance degrading during those times?   I know the answer.....

There's a reason a lot of players that compete around here don't play at the times in question and play during the day instead and it has nothing to do with their own PC.

Last night my connection was so bad that I could barely finish a match play with YankeeJim, I got some other weird errors too like a Grey putting grid in reverse view.

Thanks IWB for the link, looks interesting so I thought I would copy the info directly here.

I have found  there seems to be a correlation between CRC errors and meter problems.

Have been monitoring this for a while since I first noticed and it is always the same.

Is there something about the way Flash Player handles CRC's ?

Screenshot from DMT tool highlighting problem time and typical amount

Question for you though, how are you "forcing" the connection as you said?

DMT Tool for my Netgear allows me to set the SNR at a percentage of my set rate on the download side.

Handy little tool to have. Saves having to telnet into the modem and hurl code.

I really dont understand how most of the talk is about the meter, I have had very little issues with the meter in the last few months, But the Loading is getting too slow to even want to join a group, no one has the patience to wait for the whole grope to load. I have done every thing on my end I can do, defrag, disk cleanup, latest flash download, and I have 4 gig ram I dont get the slow load thing! I am having wait times for loading hole 1 of 2-3 min, and 30 sec to 1 min inbetween holes on st andrews.
