I knew this day has been coming, and well, it finally arrived... made Legend today. My question for those who have been here a while is... I am at lvl85, is it worthwhile to upgrade from the lvl62 R9 to the lvl80 R9, or just wait for the R11? Is that five yards really going to make much difference? My next question would be for someone with some 'insider' info... will there be a higher level G20 driver (unlocking somewhere between the R9 and the R11) coming out any time in the near future? If yes, it would most likely make my first question irrelevant...

Just my opinion, the level 80 R9 is a great club. I used it for a long time. When I bought the R11 cannon I had a rough time getting used to it. The old Lvl 80 R9 seems to hit farther than the R11 if you have a head wind. But in the long run, the R11 is the bomb. If your a legend, which I am not yet, you need all the gun you can get. The lvl 80 R9 will be worth the price until you can get the R11. My first 400 yrd plus drive was with the R9. I have since beat it by 2 yrds with the R11.

Get the 80 R9, by all means. It will definitely make a difference and carry you nicely up to the R11. Been there.  ;-)

I have had both of those R9 drivers and the difference is definitely noticeable- easily more than the pro shop numbers.

One quick tip about the level 80 version, I find that adding a touch of backspin on drives seems to make it much more controllable than using top or no added spin, besides adding a bit of carry.  That may be just something in my head, but I don't usually roll into the really deep stuff which was my main problem before trying the backspin.

First off, the level 80 R9 is a lot longer than your current level 62; the 5 yards rating difference is irrelevant; I routinely hit it 300 yards or so under normal conditions. Into the wind, it is the longest driver (i use topspin into the wind), will easily outhit the R11 (by as much as 20 yards). Downwind, in particular, the R11 has some advantage, however it isn't that much different in terms of distance under most circumstances and into the wind, this is the BOMB. And, you have a  WAYS to go before you can acquire it (the R11 driver).

It seems to me the main advantage of the R11 is more precision/forgiveness and a slower meter - however it does not match the meter speed of the R11 irons (which are faster), so that is a consideration. I would recommend you upgrade and have your driver and irons speeds match.

As for the new Ping driver - who knows? I will certainly rent it when it comes out (soon) but no one knows what to expect. If it is equal to or better on specs than the R9, with a slower meter, I may consider it - but also want to see how it matches up to the new higher level Ping irons...and whether or not it makes sense to acquire those as well. The level 80 R9 and Burner 2.0 irons are a deadly combination if you can routinely ding your shots (which you obviously can). Whether there is an intermediate set from Ping before you/we can have the R 11 set in our bag, well we should know soon.

I am at the same level (one rung up) as you and frankly have held off ranked rounds to avoid hitting from the parking lot until I have the R11 irons at my disposal. Driver wise, I could see staying with the R9 but also see advantages to the R11 driver (however plenty of legends have stayed with the R9).

We shall see whether new Ping clubs alter the landscape any...I did, btw try/buy the new level 59 G20's and found them to be a nice improvement over the G10's - on a good day I can throw darts wit em. I have em as backup when my reflexes slow a bit due to the third or fourth toddy when playing AS and I need to give my burners a rest... lol.

Personally, I would almost guess that the level 80's Pings will NOT be called G20's but rather i20's -specs to be determined, but better than the i15's.

FUNNY THING I just started doing this a week or so ago, and I wondered the same thing. Just a touch of backspin and it does go farther.

Same here, most drives are 300 plus. even into a 20mph headwind a little topspin will carry the ball 280-300yrds...

Don't confuse carry with total distance. Carry is the time the ball is in the air. That top spin gets the ball on the ground sooner and gets the distance after it lands with roll. This is fun to do at RSG and SA where you get some serious extra roll on some of those fairways.

Using full backspin in a helping wind will get you some really long times in the air plus, if you play it right and can get the ball to land on the backside of a slope, the ball acts like it hit a trampoline and takes off.  Landing on the face will stop it, though. That's where top spin helps by rolling over the hill.
