    100plus:

I also use this shot from various distances, usually when multiple breaks or anything over 50 feet unless almost dead straight.I have holed a lot more of these from over 40 feet then I have made by putting from over 40 feet, but the real blessing in learning the shot is the amount of par saves you get after a terrible approach shot .Just my opinion

Well put that is when the shot should be used or when there is no direct path to the hole....

Here's how it works for me,

Clubs LVL80 CG16 64°, ball Nike LVL71 20XI-X, FULL shot, Full B/S, FULL swing, ball travels ±27 yards with 1 yard or so rollout.

    the LVL78 CG16 60° club will yield ±37 with 1-2 yards rollout.

You do need to compensate for wind somewhat and the break near the hole.

But Practice makes perfect, I hole about 20-25% of the shots but almost always get the ball 1-2 feet from the hole.

This has saved PAR on MANY occasions.

    Danny

Thanks for all the replies, guys. I feel much like Terry in that it may be within the rules of the game, but not in the spirit of it. I can see its use as occasional rescue when facing a long putt with huge breaks after a bad approach, but using it as a standard shot for anything outside 10ft is difficult to reconcile with my understanding of the game.

Agreed, I'd like to see a "time down" for the following shot, i/e how long would  it take to repair a divot on the green?

Might make things interesting with a 60 second timer;)

I use it when I have an undulating, big elevation changing putt. STA #12 comes to mind. Front pin and you miss the FW badly and hit way long on top of the hill. Or STA 17 if you misjudge the wind and wind up short but still on the green with the far back pin.

I use full shot mode always. I've never used punch. Full shot mode, full backspin the ball travels have the yardage distance it normally would.

For instance: My 64° TM with full backspin, full power will go 48 yrds. If the putt was 72 feet or 24 yrds I would hit that club full power full backspin.

Hope that makes sense. It works every time for me. Just take green sloping away or towards you into consideration.

It's not against the rules, but it's used way too often. It should be made so difficult to pull off that it's a last resort, not a go-to shot.

I don't feel this way at all. I feel if you're a good enough putter you can make more of those putts inside 25 or 30 feet than the guys using their wedges. I'm referring to a typical 25-30 footer with  a few feet of break and/or elevation.

As I already posted, I don't use it much at all. Maybe once or twice a week. And I play a lot of rounds a day.

There's a few holes within WGTs courses where that shot has to be played unless you want to almost guarantee a 3 putt. Go to #17 STA and position your ball short left front with the far back pin. There's a couple on Oakmont if you're on the wrong side of the hill and have to putt through the fringe. With WGTs inconsistent fringe it makes it impossible to judge the distance.

Is it really any different than putting from the fairway? Sorry you can't putt from the fairway. You can only use your putter on the greens. Any club in your bag can be used at anytime for any shot. The way it should be.

I don't think anybody argues that if It's in your bag you can use it anywhere on the coarse but as Leon said it is used way to often. Playing the shot from 10 ft. seems to me to be against what we all think golf is about. If you want to game the game that's up to you. I understand that winning is everything to some people but I don't think it is golf the way it is meant to be played, besides don't you want to learn to be a good putter.?.

Oh hell yeah, I agree completely. I bet if those that use it too often would learn how to putt on here they would make more putts than wedge shots.

Just because you can, doesn't mean you should.

I guess the point I was trying to make is they shouldn't penalize the ones who use it when they need it by making that option more difficult to master.

If you have to use a wedge on the green to make 10ft putts on here, you suck.
