I am looking for a quick explanation of when to use what approach shots. There will be times in the rough near the green it defaults to chip, shoot it perfect and it goes no where ! help please !

    Please follow icon's pointer.

In short terms: A chip will be the default for all shots <20 yds (approx.) to the flag. If the fringe or green aren't as close as 20% (1) of the intended shot length, the chip will fail (which is quite often).

    (1) I don't believe the 25 % mentioned frequently.

The short answer is, first make sure the ball lands on the green. Don't chip unless you're within a couple of yards.  As a very, very rough guide, a chip travels about 20 to 50 percent of the total distance in the air; pitch about 50-80, flop about 80-100%

The shot description ie pitch, chip, flop etc defines when and where these shots are appropriate..though there may be  circumstances where you need to improvise.Reading all you can on the forums and beyond will benefit your game but practise is best medicine.

    just  my 2 cents

do not use the chip shot if your more than 2 yrds off the green either pitch or flop

Chips are 25% air and 75% roll, always remember this when taking a shot, divide the distance to hole by 4, and if you can't get over the fringe, do not chip. Full backspin on a chip as well requires additional movement of the aim marker as when it lands it does take a hefty bounce with the break then rolls.

Pitches from Bunkers require an additional 3-4 yards on the shot with full BS.

Pitches from Fairway require a reduction of 4 yards on the shot with full BS.

    Just general bits and bobs.

P.s. an 8yrd chip with a 60yrd CG with full BS goes 6yards, 7 with half BS. 9 with half-top. 11yrd chip with full BS goes about 8.5/9yards. always account for elevation. 8yards to hole from fringe with 12in up will require half top spin.

If you're flopping, the yardage will be spot on out of the fairway or fringe if  you apply full backspin, hit the ding and move the aim marker to the left of the hole.

I find on flop shot let the lines come in and ding it on the last line before center works for me!!
