Reading Grain

  Is there any way to determine direction of the grain on the greens other than the shadows?

  Did you discover such influence?

  FWIW, shadow may move very fast here. On OAK #1, I once putted from above to the downhill hole in total shade, but the backputt would be on the sunny side.

  That said, the photographs have been taken at different times regardless of the grain direction. I therefore assume that this has no effect here.

  Of course there is. The moving dots on the green indicate which direction your putt will move, and the red/blue areas on the green are an additional help.

  I guess you're talking about which way the grass is leaning and the effect this has on ball speed and direction rather than actual undulations in the green.  As far as I know you don't need to worry about that, it seems all grass at WGT grows perfectly vertical.

  Wouldn't that be something though?  You have an indicator to show which direction the sun is and have to make allowances for which way the grass is lying.

  The moving dots only tell you the slope and undulations of the green surface. They will not tell you if you are putting into the grain, with the grain, or across the grain.

  If the shadows of golfers and the flagstick were real time, you could generally assume that the direction of the shadow would be into the grain, and 180 degrees from the shadow would be downgrain. In other words, grain normally grows toward the setting sun. I guess the pictures could have been taken anytime, however, the grain would still be in those directions...I think.

  WTF is wrong with you people. Don't give WGT any more ideas on how to screw up this game more than they already have. FFS if you want to read the grain on greens go play golf irl and leave this one alone.

  Good point. While we are here, isn't it an idea to let the wind have influnce on the putting too?

  There is no grain on WGT.  You don't need to factor it in to any shot calculations.
