This topic may have been discussed somewhere else on this forum but I couldn't find anything, so sorry if I'm beating a dead horse here. I can't get any distance from the fairway traps. If I'm 200 yards from the pin and try hitting a 3 iron from the trap, forget about it, I'm lucky if the ball travels 70 yards. Is this just the way it is or am I missing something here?

it depends what type of sand you are in.

if it's 15/20% sand, if you have the right angle (down slope for example) you can hit a long iron. if it's anything above, such as 30/40% or higher, you have to hack it out with wedge/high iron and then scrabble for par.
