TarheelsRule:
I would like to see WGT make it so nothing works on the green except the putter. Some of the long and difficult putts are much easier with the wedges and even without the spin, the good players will adapt quickly. If the issue is not wanting people to use the wedge on the green, then just make the shot not work WGT.
the issue here though is that it is not against the rules of golf to use a wedge or any club for that matter on the greens, whether people frown upon it or call it ungentlemanly is immaterial.
for sure...i've only ever seen phil mickelson do it once flopping a wedge from on the green...but that's just it....because the rules clearly state that any club can be used on the green....he chose to hit that shot. i didn't hear any of his fellow pro's whine....why??? because they all fully understand the rules of golf.
WGT have removed the spin whilst on the green which I have no problem with, but to totally take away the use of wedges or any club other than the putter would be clearly changing the rules of golf.
the only issue i see here are players whining because others are wedging on greens....that is the real issue here.
if any rule is not being broken, then the rule must remain.
folks should just get over it...and allow everyone to play the shots they feel most comfortable with regardless.
would it bother me if WGT only allowed a putter to be selected on the green? no it wouldn't....what would bother me though was the fact that wgt had felt obliged to alter the rules of golf because some players just don't like seeing it or don't handle it too well watching others doing the green wedge.
next time anyone is playing an opponent who decides to give the green wedge a go....just cover your eyes for 10 seconds & try to relax.
