I read here that forum participation is encouraged. Maybe this is a bit selfish since my first appearance here is asking for help - but. Some posters encourage the use of 3 wedges - and I use the Pings with 110yd, 85yd, and 60yd distances. I often use the flop shot for a 30yd shot. What advice of the top of your head could you offer me (other than putt better). Thanks!

I use the same distance set up and personally i love it, a lot of TL's ive played with have the same and similar. Its good because you have a nice full range and when you start to use punch shots there isnt a distance under 110 you cant hit accurately.

Thanks - I've never used the punch shot technique for wedges. I assume you learned this technique via practice rounds? Any useful beginner tips?

No i just do it in ranked stroke play.. basically its great for an awkward distance inbetween the sweet spots on your wedge full stroke lengths.. helps if you have a headwind with some good spin to pull them up.. generally aim 3-4 ft  before the hole.

I agree with FB having the three wedges gives a full range. So my recommendation is to ditch the hybrid and go for three equally spaced wedges.

The punch shot is a great option and takes the risk out of trying "half shots" and effectively adds new clubs to your bag.

Best to try them in practice mode and work out how the ball reacts to your clubs, spin and elevation changes and take notes. Soon you will realize what you have missed out on lol.

There are many good posts on the punch, but here is one I started some time go.

Also try all types of shots around the green, yes the flop works well, but depends on the course so is a good idea to have a full repertoire IMO.

I love the punch shot with the wedges. The lower trajectory is great  especially in heavy winds and they stop on a dime without the heavy backspin you sometimes get with a full shot

The punch allows you to hit a higher % of power at a lower distance. Most clubs just hit better when swung harder. You get more spin and a truer flight.  Hitting a punch at 80% is better than a full shot at 65% to go the same distance.

The punch has a lower  trajectory is less affected by wind but will also roll out more especially where the green is elevated. 1 or 2 feet doesn't make much difference but 7 or 8 feet of elevation will.

Definitely, a shot to  practice  and get comfortable with!

    Good Luck!

Pony, one important thing when using punch with wedges...you need much less correction for crosswinds. If you had like a 10mph direct crosswind, and you move the aim target x amount to compensate, with a punch shot, you should move it only about 1/3 that much. Also, headwinds and tailwinds have less effect on the shot when using punch.

    cheers,

    Bob

Don't stop the dinger in the middle, but around the line to the left of the middle line to shoot towards the marker.

Wow - you guys are great - I want to say thanks for your time and interest - read every single reply with interest. I started trying some of the hints here and I believe they will help with some of those awkward yardages. I always tried hit the low 40yd shot full and very inconsistent.

Anybody here drive it in the rough on occasion? At what range of rough do you use the punch shot. I'm good with the 3H punch from the rough but not much else.
