With all respect this year's tournament isn't any different to any of the previous events, it's always been for the top players. The fact that the equipment and balls are even better now than previously, only means that the top players have become even better in terms of scoring. Merion only being a par 70 has a big part in the cut being as low as it is and will get to.

Then why shouldn't it be Tier based with each tier having a chance at it. If you have read here in the forums you have folks from the lower tiers trying to compete and cannot even reach the fairway with their drivers. Is that an incentive to keep trying?

Because there can be only 1 winner of the US Open.

I think the US Open is here for the top players in Wgt and that's the way it should stay. Everyone else should aspire to get there next year if they can't get there this year.

IRL i'd like to play in the real US Open but i'm not good enough. Doesn't mean to say the USPGA are gonna let me play off closer tee's or make it easier for me to qualify.

You didn't even read what I posted. Why can't they have it tier based. Each tier has a winner.

My point is that WGT claims is that it most realistic golf game out there. Top 10 scores from the last US Open held at Merion in 1981. Granted there are way better equipment now but look at the list from the top 10 any 61's. Better yet any 53's, 54's, 55's 56's.

    David Graham 68-68-70-67--273
    Bill Rogers 70-68-69-69--276
    George Burns 69-66-68-73--276
    John Cook 68-70-71-70--279
    John Schroeder 71-68-69-71--279
    Lon Hinkle 69-71-70-70--280
    Sammy Rachels 70-71-69-70--280
    Jack Nicklaus 69-68-71-72--280
    Frank Conner 71-72-69-68--280
    Chi Chi Rodriguez 68-73-67-72--280

Yes i did. You wanted there to be a winner from each tier. My opinion is there can be only 1 winner of the US Open and that should be the best.

I feel the sentiment here. WGT took the "realistic" part of this game and through it to the curb. Not intentionally but just not thinking accurately. Also, they (WGT) is and has been so inpatient when it came to developing new equipment.  My goodness. You made Drivers that can blast a ball 350 yards, "on average". Come on man. That is absurd.  Then WGT developed gb's that slow the meter to a CRAWL. Combined, equipment + gb's WGT RUINED what was once a VERY realistic golf game. Scores / final cuts are now just down right ridiculous.

So now they try and fix this mistake by creating UL, which I personally find not enjoyable. UL are no realistic then the dart game we now play. Come on man, if your on an angled lie you have to aim towards the next freaking county for the ball to go in the direction in needs too and THAT is not realistic. UL is just a game they (WGT)  developed to cover up and smooth over all the wrong, inpatient, and improper decisions they made to the 'ORIGINAL WGT" golf game.

I wrote a post the same day Merion opened and had already predicted the final cut to be 54 to compete in the WGT open. A 54 ! Yeah,,,okay,,,LOL.

Probably not but it won't stop a lot of them from aspiring to get there in future years as they improve and are able to get the competitive clubs.

I can sympathise with frustrated players who feel it's a waste of time even trying. That isn't a reason in itself to run other tournaments alongside, for me that devalues the premier WGT event of the year.

I agree that the effects of UL are strongly exaggerated, but that is better than kiddy play (with no UL at all). To make the game more realistic WGT should

    - reduce the magnitude of UL effects

    - decrease the distance of best clubs (and the difference between them and starter clubs)

    - decrease club accuracy (max 3.5 points), forgiveness (max 2.5), spin (max 3.5 for wedges, less for others), and substantially missed dings should lead to REALLY bad shots (that in case of iron shots would halve the distance and for wedge/flop shots may halve or double it :))

    - implement variable wind conditions (that instead of single speed and direction there is a range of them how the actual wind may impact shots, which under difficult weather conditions could be quite wide)

This would substantially increase scores. At the same time it would be helpful to merge tiers, making current Tour Legends as Legends, Legends as Masters, Masters/Tour Masters as Pros, Pros/Tour Pros as Amateurs, and Amateurs/Hacks as Hacks.

Then the whole thing would start making some sense...
