    PTrenter:

Yeah, shame on wgt for not making the 5th and 6th easy birdie holes and making you think about your approaches a bit more.

They are the holes people love to hate on a course people love to hate, but grab a birdie there and you know you've done very well.  I love seeing a single play comp with Merion in heavy wind.  Sorts the men from the boys.

We have a monthly tournament in our cc called The Hardcore. 4 rounds, 18 holes each, heavy wind, now champion speed greens, all single play. It beats the crap out of you, but its a lot of fun. I shot a 68 on Merion and had a blast :-)

My biggest gripe about Merion is the ramp-up in difficulty from master to legend. Holes 5, 6, and 9 are freebies in a legend vs. master match.

People used to think the same about Oakmont a few years back. Now it seems to have shifted to the "easy" course status. Same with Olympic... there are people here that can write a book about where to land your ball on each hole in any course. Trial an error... but even that doesn't guarantee you won't get a bite from the rabid dog... I get many...

    What's it to you?

FWIW,I seriously doubt your old, fat butt could keep up with me IRL on a daily basis.

It is not about quantity but quality. YankeeJim has many insightful posts if you'd care to look. It is members like him that keep watch and help when needed. So what if he enjoys posting a lot, many of us like that.

Merion #5 front pin land it WAY right and let it trickle down around the pin..did it by accident once and it works....I can only tell you how to get within 35 ft on the back pin as I have never been close to it lol...

#6 stay right of pin below the hole and hope to make 15-20ft uphill putt...par is better than a bogey...you can do better but not consistantly...

#9 just shoot at the pin...

Merion and its steep greens is my favorite course too.  Yoyu cant just play it once or twice and expect to score low, It takes many rounds to know where to land on approaches and even then its a bit of luck rather than judgement that your ball might not roll off the green,.  Some holes you have to just take a par and count a birdie as a bonus.

Play to land short, right in the fairway adjacent to the green. Hole high is too far. Trust it because it rolls after that and feeds to the hole. The trick is finding how far right and low to land the shot-just make sure you land on the fairway.  :-)
