  If you are playing St Andrews, you can not help but end up in the fescue. Fescue for those unfamilar with it is the worst form of rough. Impossible to hit out of without using punch shot. Hitting distances are impossible to judge beyond 30-40% fescue. It ruins your hole. It ruins your round. It ruins your St Andrews experience.

  I find myself playing St Andrews a lot because the forgiving fairways and huge greens make it relatively easy to shoot under par. Unless you tango in the fescue then all bets are off.

  I find that drives that hook slightly to the left on #9 and #10, two straight, short birdie holes, end up in the fescue. Other holes have vast amounts of fescue lurking just off the fairways. Straight drives and not trying to overdrive fairways is the key. Avoid the fescue!

  practice the shot repeatedly with a starter ball and you will find the correct club to hit & distance that will be achieved......

  ...the only way out, as in real golf, if you end in that stuff is usually a punched wedge (try 9-7 punched & see what happens...) out onto the nearest part of the fairway and learn to fine tune your drives & iron shots so you reduce the amount of times you go in the fescue....

  While fescue and St. Andrews are in the conversation, will we be having an Open Championship on St. Andy's next year Icon, or Shoe, or Typhoon .... or ...

  If you end up in the fescue often at St Andrews, you are not playing very well. You can parallel park an aircraft carrier on those fairways!

  Unless you like to thread the needle on those holes where it necks down, sure you can lay-up short of it but there's no challenge in that....

  Even if you do thread the needle, there is still no excuse for being in the fescue. The fairways are still plenty wide, and the first cut is also very wide
