  Anyone have any ideas on how to achieve maximum backspin or forward spin on my shots (without having to purchase balls from the Pro Shop specifically designed for this)?  Moving the small red dot up or down inside the ball icon to the right of the swing meter (using the stock default balls) seems to have little or no effect. Or I resigned to continually buying balls from the Pro Shop with "spin characteristics".

  As long as you keep playing with the starter clubs you wont get spin . Starter clubs are to help you get familiar with the game play . But if you want to improve your game then you will have to upgrade . Do the videos and surveys to earn your credits . You can also do some offers to get credits or you can purchase credits .

  The bottom line is , you have to pay to play in some way or form and thats just the way it is. Many of us have played and still play without spending any money . So earning credits is easy to do for upgrades and buying balls . So if you plan on staying I would suggest you follow the above advice for better game play results .

  Just wanted to say thanks for your comprehensive reply regarding my question regarding ball spin. I assumed exactly what you've explained but wanted verification. One small final question: Am I to assume that upgrading my clubs also enhances ball spin (in addition to various custom balls for purchase made for that purpose)? Thanks again!

  If rewarding, choose the shortest iron, etc. (e.g. instead of choking a 4 iron at 82% go for the 5 iron, you know what I mean?) and the starter lob wedge was a good friend when I started - I scored a couple a dozen holed approach shots using the flop, which used to stop better more so than the other types of shots w/ the starter ball.

  in short:

  use the shorter irons if possible

  master the flop shot w/ the lob wedge (I don't like to flop from the sand, but it may be different for others)
