If rewarding, choose the shortest iron, etc. (e.g. instead of choking a 4 iron at 82% go for the 5 iron, you know what I mean?) and the starter lob wedge was a good friend when I started - I scored a couple a dozen holed approach shots using the flop, which used to stop better more so than the other types of shots w/ the starter ball.
in short:
use the shorter irons if possible
master the flop shot w/ the lob wedge (I don't like to flop from the sand, but it may be different for others)
