Tom, you are asking for 3 modifications simultaneously: 1) a driving range, 2) cheap club rentals, 3) balls with 'endless life'.
3.) Unless you use a starter ball, this isn't going to happen. (If you use the "Mulligan" feature, you will use 2 'hits' worth of ball life with each swing of the club - including the putter - on the green). The Mulligan, is very useful for testing just about everything you mention - on any course that you desire. Just remember that each course plays just a little bit different and that the rough at St. Andrews will not be exactly like the rough at Congressional.
2.) Once, every Green Moon (or so) WGT breaks free and allows "Free Rental Weekends" - this past weekend was an example. When the next one will occur is always a mystery - but you will have to wait until the next one if you don't want to pay for the rentals. Also, just a note, you will only have access to equipment allowed for your level of play.
1.) This probably been the most requested item on this Forum and the one most ignored by WGT. By entering the "Practice" mode, you can (sortof) make your own Driving Range - just pick a course, hit your ball into whatever hazard you want & use the "Mulligan" feature to adjust aim points and power combinations. I do not know if you can switch clubs during the Mulligan (but I suspect NOT), but remember that Mulligans shorten ball life.
The fact that you cared enough to request this is an indication that you want to be more competitive and like the game. Good! When frustrations build - just remember to ask yourself "Am I having fun, yet?"
Good luck.
