"Bringing down the US Open"...no. " Making the course hard" for the best players in the world... makes good sense to me.  As far leaving Augusta alone...it will never stop changing.  WGT brings us what the Pros get.  Awesome game.

    Happy Golfing

It's beyond stupid for the USGA to make a par 5 a par 4 just so it will be tougher. I'm convinced that's the only real reason why they do it? Make the course hard to play. The USGA is obsessed with getting that even par or +1 winning score and it's bringing down the US Open. They need to look at what The Masters is doing. It is a tough course but it is being played the way it was meant to be played. The USGA needs to stop messing with holes like this. This is one of the reasons the US Open will never be close to the Masters.

But on the other hand -15 to -20 under is silly.

Par is just an arbitrary number anyway. Everybody is playing the same setup, and the number of strokes is whatever it is.

How can the 7th hole be a par 4 with a distance ranging from 498-510 yds?

BPB #7 isn't the only hole here that is a par 5 for the members but a par 4 on here because the USGA  made it a par 4 for the Ladies Open last summer. Oakmont # 9 is a par 5 for the members but the USGA made it a par 4 for the Ladies U.S. Open last summer. I don't know about the other years that Oakmont hosted the U.S. open, but in the 1962 Open #9 played as a par 5 for the men then.
