The hard sand at Kiawah is not really traditional sand. Those are waste bunkers, not played as hazards, you can ground your club in them. On the real course there at Kiawah, the traps were pretty much just pushed up out of the dunes, the sand is very different than most courses, much more firm. There are some true sand traps on the course but even those are a firmer sand than the white powder found in places like BPB.
