And the Anglo-Saxon 6th century was actually:

Pryke; derived from 'Prickie' = arrow head maker

Sry this has hijacked the thread.

:)  - well as the op was only looking for gifts anyway.. sh i didn't really say that, honest...

    Pryke:

William Doyle (wwd(at)juno.com) sent me the following snippet which seems to support the "Ride" theory:

A gentle Knight was pricking on the plaine

                    - Spenser, Faerie Queene, I.i.1

shouldn't I be puting this up?

    Pryke:

"Pryke" is also used in Henry Medwall's Fulgens and Lucres:

Nay, we shall nede no horse ne mule,
But let us just at farte pryke in cule.

i'll start here..... may not deal with the rest later :)

    i see you quote latin

    "farte pryke in cule"

having spent a year in rome as part of my degree....

    culo = bum hole    ....... -    i'm sure there's a link here somewhere :)

    i rest my case :)

I didn't quote latin, my previous post was suggesting that there is no direct, linear link between any of my, or your, suggestions. These quotes were taken from different sites regarding the etymology of my surname.

I also have spent time abroad (Asia, not Europe) as part of my degree programme. In which time I learnt research is more then putting a word into Google and pressing enter.

and may i add, that any reply i have added here (other than to the op), has been added purely in jest, and i hope you have taken it so....
