I have 645 friends and I'd like to delete the oldest 500. Is there any easy way to do this?
If you open the WGT app and click on 'friends', you should see an 'edit friends' button top right, click that.
You will only see up to 255 of your oldest friends listed there, but at least you can remove more than one at a time.

Although now her profile says she's got "only" 93 friends, the list still shows definitely more than 93 portraits of players.

That's not good, and as far as I know the only way to fix that problem is to block and then unblock your ex-friends. I'm fairly sure it removes your profile picture from that friends profile too.
So you might as well just block/unblock those friends you don't want as that does both jobs. That's a real pain for removing a large number of friends.
So... for Maya, it'd be some 500+ block/unblock process to go through.
You might need one of these on your wrist or index finger, Maya.

It's true my profile page still has all my ex-friends' photos, but in game, I can now actually see all 93 of my friends. so thanks again.
As far as I know the friend list can and does vary depending if you look at it through the app or through the web page. For mobile users if they had been added on the app , and removed on the web page they remained showing as friends on the app. What I don’t know is if that is just an historic issue or if it remains.
