In the case of Olympic, the restarts are a huge help in learning the course, hole by hole. It has taken me a couple days to take Hole #1 from a par hole to a birdie hole for me (meaning I have 90% certainty of a birdie). This is a direct result of having played the hole maybe 75 times already. Now I am working on that for successive holes, one by one. By the time the qualifier is over, I expect to post mid-50's. It's all in how you look at things!

I'm not a top player by any means, but .... like BeachedMulligan said, what you're sort of describing is single-play tourneys, free or not. I don't like unlimiteds at all; they're good for learning and practice, but if I play one I never play over and over and over again. I'd like to see qualifiers, especially, be multiple round single play tourneys.... at least 4 or 5 full rounds. To get 1 chance each time and do really well each round really shows who the best players are; actually, I think it would help the top players and hurt everybody else (including me).

When it comes down to the championship rounds, it is two rounds single play.

Also the conditions will no doubt be heavy winds and championship greens.

And you know what? The top players will still be shooting 56 or 57.

All we have to do is qualify............( easier said than done though )

Yep, that's what I was sort of getting at: With an unlimited, a lot more people have a chance. Lots of people can shoot 56 every once in a while, and if they can try 100 times, they will. That's not the best way to sort out the best players, imo -- but I guess it does make the qualifier more open, and it is the Open, after all.

Your last paragraph says it all very well.  Your Nickle.

Yet those who constantly quit and restart in tournaments DO affect others by dominating the leaderboards and taking all the awards. Just as a quitter in a game with you keeps quitting until he/she can win.

A truly good player who can consistenty hold it together for 18 holes should rise to the top rather than the player who keeps quitting while waiting for lightning to strike. I guess I see it as an 18 hole round as opposed to a round that is only as many holes as I can hold it together.

It's also the difference between those who would like this game to approach reality as much as possible and those who view this as a computer game to be beaten.

Actually most folks cannot and have not carded a 56, me included. Even with 100 starts, it is an accomplishment that requires countless hours of practice to learn every nuance of the course, particularly the greens. And, you need to get just a bit lucky (hole outs and such) to shoot that or lower. No one is 'the best player' every single time, at any level. Not quite sure what all the fuss is about regarding the unlimited qualifier. I appreciate it to learn the course, qualify, and have a shot at being in contention, just like anyone who qualifies for the US Open in real life. They can - if they choose, play the course unlimited times prior to the Open itself.

I get where you're coming from but as long as the $ end of the scene remains a necessity it won't change. You'd be killing the cash cow.

As for real pros playing courses over and over, well, they have driving ranges and putting greens where we don't. Fair trade.

I know this has been beaten around like a bad step child,,

But in MOP.Qualifying rounds should be a one shot deal. You don't make it the first time ,,Your out.

Hey ,,,The real pros only get one shot..Ps .Posted before reading Y J 's post.I do get that point on the fair trade. But then againg.Everyone has the same un knowen for that one shot qual.

Perhaps this is the straw that will make WGT rethink the driving, putting ranges.  my nickle.
