    TWOMINUSONE:

Canuck4ever has it right, aim for the line before the ding, leaving the marker over the hole.. But you can also play the shot by moving the aimer to the left. Try both, and use whatever shot your most comfortable with.

BTW, wouldnt class myself as a top player, but the info is good above.

You (and Canuck) are in THAT tribe - the one that has it wrong. I sincerely believe when you aim at the pin and hit the early line, it is no longer a 'flop shot' it's a modified pitch. If you aim left and hit the ding the yardages listed are much more accurate and the ball will stop quickly.

OP needs to heed the 'aim it left' group

I disagree Bob, and I am pretty good at the flop.

I hit the line before ding and usually stiff anything under 20 yards.

E.G. a 12 yard  shot from 40-50% rough I hit the full 20 yard flop with BS.

    E.G a 12 yard flop from a perfect lie, I hit 70 - 75 % power on the 20 yard flop. Full BS

Rough up to 30% makes no difference with the Cleveland wedges.

I tend to avoid flopping over 20 yards, as it is more unreliable than a pitch, punch or full shot.

If I have a good lie in the sand & inside 20 ft., I always flop it. I can land it outta light sand pretty close with consistency. Just aim left & ding it a few yards harder because of the sand. Only if I have a 20% lie in the bunker.

I use the flop on lots of short bunker shots.

Have to disagree on this one, a flop can be much more accurate and reliable on certain greens up to 30 yards or more.  There's plenty of greens i wont dare use a pitch shot on because i know it will roll for miles, where as a flop will stop bang on!.  Will even use the 38 yard flp occasionally if hit with a touch less power.

Cheers Bob, but OP was asking how others play this shot, not how playing it turns it into another shot. He was basically asking how we do it, and this is what we replied to. You are correct though on the distance of the shot changing slightly, but this is just a small thing to consider when you get enough practice at playing both types of shot. A minor adjustment. Using the flop without spin can help the ball roll that little bit further out as well. Cheers.
