    bubbadork:
If WGT were to abandon entirely the browser based game, and using Flash, and provide the game as a downloadable game written in C/C++, or even assembler, they could not guarantee a perfectly smooth swing meter on anything less than a real-time system.  Windows, Linux, Mac, you name it, what you're playing on is not a real-time system.

What you are saying bubba is those people who play this game on a PC browser using Flash and swear their meter is perfect, silky, buttery smooth,  smooth as as a baby's bottom, etc. etc. aren't telling the truth?

    I don't blame them either.

    No, I'm not saying that.

As for smoothness, my system looks perfectly smooth painting the multiple pixels per pass.  Right up until the number of pixels gets well out of hand.  A ten-year old CRT display with resolutions (ppi) available at that time would also look perfectly fine.  The persistence of human vision does wonders.  It's why movies and TV work for us.  A display operating at 60 Hz is painting the entire screen every 16 milliseconds.  We visually integrate that and perceive smooth motion.

The problem occurs when we drop below the magic threshold.  Things then begin to look jumpy or flickery.

Or smoke one too many bowls or have 1 too many a drink :) Then you see those same effects only better :)

I suppose we should get back on topic, although studying the meter issue has been very interesting for me.

I don't buy MAX balls because I don't care at all about the slow meter speed.  I have two modes:  when I'm in normal mode I can hit the ding quite frequently and get very close most of the rest of the time.  When I'm in old-man spastic mode I will be an inch late, or worse.  It wouldn't matter if the meter were creeping along.  So I buy spin.

Currently, I'm working on my putting, so I don't even buy spin.  I've reverted to GI 3-S balls for that, because I won a few sleeves here and there.

In this case it isn't how fast you can do things, it's how often you get the chance to do it. Hardware transfer of a frame buffer isn't even the same class of problem.

I'm sure you know your stuff, but also in this particular situation X stands for Unknown. Problem is that X varies. If you can program close to the core, X will be smaller. If you program close to the system limits, X will become bigger.

WGT is programming far away from the core and  they push towards the limits on system resources of an average computer, this means that the inherently evil X will be very big and powerful, forcing it's presence ever so often at various places.

You never get rid of X, but one should always strive make him small and weak so that he gets very few chances to jump in and throw sand into the machinery.

I agree with the effect but disagree with your explanation.  We could have fun discussing it, but it's off topic in this thread.  Post on my wall, if you like.
