Half of my lousy scores result from not knowing how to play a shot for windy conditions.

No matter how many rounds I play to practice, Im always hitting the ball too long or too damned short.

This is what I found and still use to this day when needing a 2nd opion as I am not sure >>>> http://www.wgt.com/forums/p/57783/341370.aspx#341370

And judging from your other forum posts the other half come from WGT screwing with your game, not allowing you a good score.

It just takes practice and alot of it. Takes 100s & 100s of games before you can get a good idea.

Edit, the quote is from the OP

This table looks way too complicated to me... A simple rule of thumb for straight (front or back) wind is as follows:

    change in distance = windspeed * clublength / 200.

For drivers/woods it's slightlly more than this and for wedges slightly less and it also depends on clubs (the above works well for G20 - for high trajectory clubs it's a bit more, for med trajectory a bit less) and balls, but that's already the fine tuning...

If it's side wind, you just need learn from practice by how much to adjust. Finally for mixed wind, estimate frontal and side components from the Pythagoras' theorem.

OMG! Is that some kind of math? Everybody knows math is not cool!  ;<)

but if you want to play this game really well, you do need a lot of math :)

It's basically calculating distance as a complex function of club, (ball), spin, ground condition, elevation and wind speed in order to find proper club and spin all the time... Sometimes it's also useful to have some probabilistic estimate of error rate and magnitude (e.g. if may lose a pricey ball, does it make sense to make a risky shot)

Plus if you are into match play games, you even need to do all of this fast ;)

I'd like to see WGT have a  tutorial on how and why to write new posts in their proper subject forum. This is the General Tournament Discussion forum.

Golf is, at its heart, a physics puzzle game.

And physics is, at its heart, applied maths. :)
