keep in mind there was a time when we all played the same clubs and there was only a dozen maybe a few more guys that could shoot ri8diculously low #s i have only 1200 or so ranked rounds so im not an expert by any means but i used to shoot par or under every round i played for a time before the new equipment was released, since then i rarely beat an opponent ranked as pro or higher , because they mostly have better equipment than i care to purchase...i do have a rapture driver but i outdrive less than 30% of my opponents ....if you want to be competitive you must have the best equipment or you will have to settle for enjoying the game as is and at best hope for  an opponent that is willing to complete the round. starter clubs are merely bait , there is a distinct advantage with starters when you first join but theres a cutoff because there will come a time when you dont know how far they'll roll out or how far they will carry. helll i lose to guys all the time with less than 100 rounds i expect because they're playing better equipment, i could be wrong,,,perhaps im just that terrible but i think, skill, knowledge an experience have nothing to do with the final score

That's one of my points though. As a beginner in real life I wouldn't be considered a pro. If I was competeting against amateurs then the game would be more rewarding. It should be equally as fun for those that play for free as it would be for those that spend money.

I have a friend who plays with the starter equipment and he plays every round from the red tees and enjoys his experience immensley....Harve

If people would realize that the people on here for a while, when they only had starter clubs, and wouldnt you know those people are some of the best on this site because of those starter clubs.  They had to learn how to play the game, and more importantly the short game in order to save many a par.  So for you guys unable to buy the better equipment at this time, but are maybe thinking of purchasing at a later time, take advantage of your disadvantage and learn the nuances of the game.

This game and site would not be able to advance if they gave everyone "good" clubs for free.  They give short hitting average clubs, that can be used to play for free, play with friends and learn the game.

Could there not be a tournament for those using starter clubs?

This is an excellent suggestion that appears to have been overlooked in this discussion.

How about a weekly starter equipment only tournament WGT?

Not the same but do you think the winner was predictable?   :-)

How 'bout a "Humble Pie" tournament on Oakmont using starter clubs and balls only?!

You know what, I had this very idea yesterday. If I run it, will people come and play?

I think that sounds like a great idea....I would play for sure.

**I have been reading many posts and share some of the same frustrations others are having.  Namely, that while I don't have too many rounds under my belt, it is extremely frustrating to hit back to back shots off the tee, perfectly, only to be either well short of the green (par 4s) or struggling to stay on the fairway.  I actually play golf in real life, and am 'pretty good' (low-mid 80's) but more importantly, have been playing my whole life.  I know the strategies and nuances etc. and while this WGT game is fun, it does seem stacked against the guy with the starter set.  After all, this is supposed to be fun, right?  Entertainment?  There are folks on here who are so defensive regarding WGT, you'd think it is a religion...or cult even.**

OK, rant over...I will go back to playing St Andrews since I can at least reach all the greens in regulation, with good shots...
