Oh, there is no doubt they play soccer in all 4 countries.  Too many what we would call "disadvantaged" people for them not to play.

My point was that the 4 biggest economies in the world do NOT have a strong World Cup presence... never have.   The World Cup should be called The Third World Cup.

Argue if you want, but those are facts.  The strongest presence in the World Cup since it's inception as been from South America with Southern Europe a distant second and then everyone else.

I am quite sure the World Cup set ticket sales records in the US... but there is not but a handful of people who could tell you who actually won that year without looking it up.

That's ok, though.  It's over for this year for the US side.. again, they choke away early goals and can't keep Ghana from embarrassing them ~again~.  All we have to do is wait about 3 weeks and no one will remember anything about this current competition other than those gawd-awful noise makers.

Then, soccer goes back in the closet for another 4 years and we can get on with the real sports.

But keep that bandwagon warmed up...  you never know when you're going to need it again.

I'll just let that one speak for itself.

Quick who won the 1994 World Series (or any major sport champion for that matter)? It was an historic event but most people don't remember.

What country bought the second most tickets this year to the World Cup (the host country is the first)?

Actually about 7 weeks...but we knew this was coming since May.

Personally I enjoy a good intellectual debate...one thing I never do is argue.

Ok, my last word on the matter... mainly because the US has no more interest in the World Cup...

Unless and until you can change the paradigm of the American sporting fan, the sport will never succeed in this country.  You will always be fighting for respect and acceptance here.

My views on soccer, and the opinions I put here, may be taken by some as a bit strong.  They are, however, mild when compared to sites like this one who say, in part:

These are the opinions that you have to change.  That is the fight you need to wage.  Trying to convince me (and others) here on a golf message board in a golf game is really not going to change anything.

Good luck to you.  Enjoy your games and your event.  May the best team (side) win.

    It's 0830 on a Sunday and I have a 0915 tee time on a gloriously beautiful day.

    Peace.

As stated before (In a thread started by you and placed in the Golf's current events category) I'm an impassioned baseball fan and  I'm the last person to be defending soccer.  I am a huge sports fan though.  Your not.

Can this thread be locked now, seeing as pretty much everyone on this site is from the US, Britain, France and Italy? World Cup Fever is feeling more like the flu now.
